Itâs with mixed feelings that I pull open the door to Sweet and Low later that evening.
Mason gets up from the same booth he was in last week and saunters toward me. His smile seems genuine, but Momâs words ring in my head.
He kisses me chastely on the cheek. The heat of his lips causes my knees to go all wobbly.
He steps back, and his eyes rove over me. Iâm glad I took the time to change into a skirt and nice top. I suck in my stomach as his gaze sweeps over me.
âYou look great,â he says appreciatively.
And he looks so sincere, so genuine that all my doubts slip away. Mom may have had a bad experience, but that doesnât mean all men are bad.
His arm goes around me, and I let him lead me to the table. Itâs the same group of colleagues from last week, and theyâre watching another basketball game.
Mason gets me a drink, and we slide into the booth. His arm goes around me protectively, and I nestle against him. It feels good and right, and I lean my head toward him so our heads are almost touching as we talk.
The conversation flows easily, and before I know it a few hours have passed.
Mason checks his phone. âDonât you need to get home soon?â
I shake my head. âIâm giving myself a day off tomorrow.â
He raises his eyebrows. âThatâs good.â He takes my hand and plants a kiss on my palm. A shiver goes through my body. âI was hoping you might come back to my place tonight.â
His eyes are locked on mine as his lips brush my wrist. Thereâs no denying his meaning.
My body responds with a rush of heat between my legs and a tug deep down in my core. My pulse races under his lips.
But Momâs words spring into my mind. âHeâs only after one thing, honey. They all are.â
He kisses my wrist and I must have an erogenous zone there, because it feels so good he may as well be kissing my lady bits.
âI know itâs a bit fast. But I have feelings for you, Dana. And youâre so beautiful I want to make you mine.â
The words are like liquid chocolate straight between my legs. Iâm literally melting in his hands. And Mom may be right. He may only be after one thing, but to hell with that. This feels so right, how could it be wrong?
I donât trust myself to speak, so I just nod.
He squeezes my shoulder. âLetâs get out of here.â
I slide out of the booth and grab my jacket. âI just need to visit the ladies.â
I head to the restroom with my mind racing. Iâm about to go home with my very own policeman. Itâs like a dream come true. I pinch my cheeks in the mirror and reapply my lipstick.
Thereâs a partition that separates the entrance to the menâs toilets from the ladies, and Iâm just coming out when I hear voices.
âMasonâs leaving early.â
I pause, knowing I should leave, but my curiosity gets the better of me.
